Antique cutwork chintz or broderie perse applique medallion quilt measuring 84 x 86 inches. Center features the word “EXCELSIOR” appliqued above what appears to be a farm with farmers, woman of the house, dog, chickens, cows, and a horse. Several chintz flowers are appliqued around it, surrounded by a wreath of larger chintz appliqued flowers and an additional border of chintz appliqued flowers on branches. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and densely hand quilted. Thin cotton batting with off white cotton reverse. The triple scalloped edge is finished with 1/4 inch binding applied by hand. The quilt was purchased in 1999 from the estate of Alice Hobbie from Newark, NJ. Brief research shows an Excelsior Dairy farm in Jersey City, which this quilt may have possibly been from. The quilt is in fair condition with overall toning, small spots, and overall fading in the chintz from being washed by a previous owner.
