Vintage Churn Dash Quilt measuring 78×95″. This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection. She was the quilter and collector from the book Mary Schafer – American Quilt Maker by Gwen Marston. Quilt is comprised of 20 Churn Dash blocks, 12.5×12.5″, set straight, 4 by 5, with 3.5″ off white cotton sashing, and 8.5″ off white with sweet blue flowers appliqued. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. This cotton batting, and off white cotton reverse. Edge is finished with an off white cotton applied binding, by hand. 1982. MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER pg 139-140: Quilt top by Betty Harriman, finished by Mary. “Betty had pieced all the blue and white blocks for Churn Dash. Mary put them together, designed and stitched the sweet appliqué border, and designed the quilting patterns.” Photo on pg 139. There is a sleeve applied to the back top edge for hanging. In good condition with a spot on front upper center. Small spot of black ink in block A-1. Inked pattern on one white patch, possibly from use of old textile bag. Other very tiny spots.
