Colored in Curls is an American Bashkir Curly Horse Gelding with a winter haircoat. He was repainted and resculpted by Emily Oakes of Moonfire Equine Art from model number 1356 Little Joe’s Cochise. Colored in Curls was inspired by some of the curly horses that Emily grew up with on Oakesmuir Farm in Ontario, Canada.About The Curly Horse. Although the breed was originally thought to have originated in the Bashkir Region of Russia, more recent research supports North American origins. For example, Sioux winter counts from 1801-1802 included images of curly-haired horses. In the 1930s, the Damele family of Nevada began breeding curly horses after they noticed those horses survived the harsh winters the best. In 1971, the American Bashkir Curly Horse Registry was created to preserve and promote this wonderful breed. Curly Horses are hardy and a great breed for people who are allergic to horses. Curlies have a reputation for calmer temperaments. Not only do curly horses make lovely family horses, they excel at high levels in a variety of disciplines including dressage and reining.
