September Antique Quilt & Textile Auction
Antique late 18th Century Whole Cloth Quilt, that is not a mistake. This quilt is from the last quarter of the 1700s. Very rare! 91in x 102in. At a glance the quilt appears to be in the whole cloth style, but upon closer observation, you will notice that there are 2 fabrics. One fabric is denser and darker for the center field, and the other is a lighter and airier motif in the four borders. Please reference Printed Textiles 1700-1850 by Linda Eaton, page 156, and Wearable Prints 1760-1860 by Susan W Greene, page 511 for very similar fabrics confirming the age of these prints. The fabrics on top appear to be cotton or cotton/linen blend. The backing also appears to be a cotton/linen blend, the batting is cotton. It is hand pieced and densely hand quilted in an overall chevron pattern with lines running .5in apart. There is an applied binding, on grain, and by hand. Please see our You Tube Channel for a video preview of this quilt.
