It is hand embroidered and hand quilted. Thin polyester batting and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied off white binding, by hand. It is in good condition with several dark spots, minor storage line discoloration, and pink mark on top border. MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER pg 140: “She bought a cross-stitched top made by Helen Day in Flint, Michigan. Helen had bought the kit through Better Homes and Gardens magazine around 1950. Helen worked at an automotive supply factory, and she told Mary that she bought the quilt so she would have something to work on during her lunch breaks. Helen finished the top in 1952 and then lost interest in it. She didn’t want to do the quilting, and the top lay around until Mary came along. Mary bought the top and finished Cross-Stitch Rose in 1986.” AMERICAN BEAUTIES: ROSE & TULIP QUILTS Pg 20: Description of quilt and photo. “Mary bought and finished this top so she would have an example of the cross-stitched quilt kits that became popular in the late 40’s and early 50’s.” This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of important Quilt History!
