MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER p145: “[Mary] was dismayed to notice that [her complicated quilts] often intimidated new quilters. … she determined to stop making elaborate quilts and return to simple pieced patterns. She wanted to make quilts that would be accessible to as many quilters as possible. … This change in philosophy resulted in quilts such as Country Home, Yarmouth Square and Pinwheel. … Mary says, ‘This simple design would be a good one for a beginning quilter. Also a good ‘rest’ design – to rest while making, or in between more involved piecing or appliqué, or when a simple design would be more appropriate.’” Photo on pg 146. Patterned in MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER. This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection. She was the quilter and collector from the book Mary Schafer – American Quilt Maker by Gwen Marston. While the quilt is not pictured in the book, it is listed in the inventory section and it is signed and dated by Mary. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of important Quilt History!
