This stunning c1890s Log Cabin Quilt or Comfort is in a Barn Raising Pattern. It measures 89×89 inches. It consists of 196 blocks, 6.25×6.25 inches and set 14 by 14. Each has a red center surrounded by 1/2 inch logs. Many logs have been specialty cut along their stripes. Very nice workmanship on this quilt. Fabrics include indigos, shirtings, cheddar, chrome yellow, claret, Garibaldi reds, double pinks, a few mourning prints, and a large variety of browns. It is hand pieced and hand tacked, NOT quilted. The reverse is a lovely double pink print. Unusual, please note, the 1 inch ruffled edge along all four sides of the quilt. There is a paper stitched to the front of the quilt stating the quilt was intended for "one of the Bacon girls, Made by My Mother". This quilt was part of Laura Fisher’s estate, found in her apartment, and was meticulously kept. Antique 1830-1840s Cutwork Chintz or Broderie Perse Quilt measuring 97×101 inches. Center motif feathers a branch with red and pink flowers and birds. At the center of each side is a chintz floral bouquet, and the corners are small arc motifs with flowers. Scattered throughout the bound are birds and butterflies. There is a floral chintz border measuring 5.5″ wide. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. The quilting is very fine, with a hanging diamond motif, with pineapple, grapes, and leaf designs. Very thin cotton batting. The reverse is a white cotton muslin, with a printed label still visible, The edges are finished with a twill tape binding. This quilt is from a Northern NJ Collector’s Estate, she purchased it in Montclair NJ in 2005. The quilt is in good condition. The center chintz is deteriorating, there are scattered spots of various sizes throughout the quilt, and a few small splits in the chintz in the border and a small hole on the back. Antique c1850s silk Hexagon Garden Quilt made by ladies in a Louisville, KY church it comes from the Richardson and Anderson families of Louisville, KY. It measures 76in x 85in with 4 8in tassels. It is meticulously hand pieced and hand embroidered. The hand embroidery is exquisite over silk and velvet fabrics and includes made names/signatures, 1855 and 1856, as well as botanical elements. Some elements were specialty cut from woven jacquard silk embroidered fabrics. Made in Louisville Ky around 1857. The back is a red silk machine pre quilted fabric. The quilting lines are not even, which makes me believe that this backing fabric was not commercially made, but rather someone at home with a very new machine. Blocks are about 11 inches by 11 inches with alternating checkboard pattern, and white with applied square corners. The blocks are set straight 7.5 by 8, note there is a half row on one side. I do not think it was cut down, just the quilter’s decision. White cotton backing and thin cotton batting. Back is brought to the front to finish the narrow edge. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. The workmanship on this quilt is quite lovely. Believed to have been from the Shenandoah Valley, VA region. In very good condition. Antique Star Quilt in Cheddar, Oxblood, and Teal measuring 75 by 96 inches. Comprised of 12 star blocks about 22inches by 22 inches, set straight 3 by 4, with a triple strip sashing and border 2 inches wide, and cornerstones of the same fabric as the block ground, a white with blue print shirting. It is hand pieced, and hand quilted. Cotton batting with blue small dot on white cotton fabric backing. A separate binding with of the same fabric was applied by machine to the back, and by hand to the front, with rounded corners. There are 2 paper tags sewn to a corner, crediting the quilt to Mrs Robert Flammer, who would have been from northwest New York State and that several family members worked on the quilt. Laura Fisher describes this textile on her website as: “White embroidery in raised dimension accentuates the aspen(?)leaves on chain stitched slender branches. Signed Z. Huston in lower right corner, dated 1874. Such embroidery candlewicks usually emerge from New England in the earlier 19th century; don’t know locale of this lovely example, | but still it is an uncommon find. Details are mirror imaged across the entire center so can be used horizontally or vertically.” Additionally, there is an APP 71 embroidered below the name and date.
